Obituary for Chesman Arthur German
C.A. German
Chesman Arthur German was born at Crab Orchard, Nebr., to Abel and
Sabine German on Dec. 13, 1873 and passed away quietly at his home at Glen
Elder, Kans., February 15, 1953, aged at the time of his death 79 years, 2
months and 2 days.
At
the age of three months in company with his parents and sister, Grace, he came
to Mitchell county, Kans., and settled on the homestead now owned by Otis
German. Very early in life he was
brought into contact with all the hardships of pioneer life.
On
September 26, 1901 he was united in marriage to Eva Hadley at Glen Elder,
Kans., and to this union five children were born. They had owned and lived on the farm where they resided for
50 years. He always enjoyed his
occupation of faring. They
celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in September, 1951.
He
was baptized as a baby in the Walnut Creek Methodist church. He was converted on his 21st
birthday. He became a member of
the South Fairview Friends church in the 1900's, which later united with the
Glen Elder Monthly Meeting forming Glenview Monthly Meeting. He was a member of the building
committee when the present church was built, spending many hours laboring in
the construction of the building.
He served as trustee and was an Elder at the time of his death. He was faithful in attendance as his
health permitted.
He
is survived by his wife, Eva, five children, Delmar L., Lowell H., Kenneth H.
of Glen Elder, L. Hazel Thompson and Blanche L. Brokaw also of Glen Elder, 16 grandchildren,
2 great grandchildren, four brothers, Otis H. of Glen Elder, Henry L. of
Portland, Ore., Harvey P. of Topeka, Dr. Walter A., of Miami, Fla., two
sisters, Mrs. Grace Hadley of Putman, Okla., Mrs. Vestal Talbot of Clayton, New
Mexico, and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by three brothers, one sister and
three grandchildren.
Gone is a kind and loving husband and
father. We shall miss the one
whose every thought was for the welfare of his loved ones. His memory will remain with us forever.,
Services were held at Glenview Friends church February 17 at 2 p.m. Rev.
J.W. Patten, a former pastor, officiating, with Rev. Beaty assisting. Ambrose Casey and Irene Neff sang
"Face To Face" and "Abide With Me". Ambrose also sang a solo, "Sunrise
Tomorrow".
Pall bearers were C.I. Stuart, Irvin Neff, Jason Lowdermilk, George
Weeks, Elwood Harrison and Fred Boehner.
Ushers were Herbert Trueblood and Frank Stouffer. The beautiful floral offerings were
cared for by Ruth Stuart and Mary Harrison.
Out of town relatives attending were Mr. and Mrs. M.D. Hadley, Putman,
Okla.; C.A. Hadley, Vera, Okla.; Mr. and Mrs. H.P. German, Topeka, Kans.; Mr.
and Mrs. Glen Barngrover, Topeka, Kans.,; Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Atwell, Kansas
City; Richard German, YNSN ss, San Diego, Calif.
Obituary for Eva A Hadley German
Eva German
Eva Adella Hadley, daughter of Noah A. and Catherine Hadley, was born
June 14, 1876 at Richland, Iowa and died at the Senior Citizen Home, Cawker City,
July 14, 1964 at the age of 88 years and one month.
At
the age of five months, she, with her parents moved to Mitchell County and
settled on a homestead near Glen Elder.
On
September 26, 1901 she was united in marriage to Chesman A. German. To this union were born five children,
three sons and two daughters.
Chet and Eva celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in September
1951. As companion and mother she
was unsurpassing in her devotion to God and her family.
She was converted early in life and was the last charter member of the
first early day Friends Church near Glen Elder. She was a charter member of the Glen View Friends Church,
also Glen View Missionary Union and was a faithful worker as long as her health
permitted.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Feb. 15, 1953 and three
grandchildren, one great grandson, one sister and five brothers.
She is survived by five children: Delmar L. German, Mrs. Howard
Thompson, Lowell H. German, Kenneth H. German and Mrs. Orren Btokaw, Glen
Elder; 16 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren, many other relatives and
friends.
Roscoe
Mendenhall, pastor of Glenview Friends church conducted funeral services for
Mrs. German at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 16, 1964 in Glenview Friends church. Harry Harrison sang Good Night and Good
Morning and Sunrise Tomorrow with Mrs. Cecil Boehner at the piano.
Mrs. Leonard Miller cared for floral arrangements. Casket bearers were George Weeks,
Elwood Harrison, Kermit Casey, Irvin Neff, Earl Harzman and Jason Lowdermilk. Cecil Boehner and Herbert Trueblood
were ushers.
Burial was in Glenwood cemetery, Glen Elder.
Relatives from out-of-town here to attend services were: Mr. and Mrs.
Leroy Atwell, Norton; Mr. and Mrs. Richard German and family, Springfield, Mo.;
Kenley German, Mahaska; Rodney German, Fairbury, Nebr.; Mrs. Vera Praeger and

Manhattan, Mr. and Mrs. Rex Thompson and family, Mr. and Mrs. Gary German and
family, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Luckey, all of Beloit; Mr. and Mrs. Orlo Brokaw,
Ionia; Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Thull, Cawker City.
